What’s behind the rise in prostitution arrests in Las Vegas? – KLAS – 8 News Now

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The number of prostitution arrests across the Las Vegas valley has skyrocketed in recent weeks according to the latest data from Las Vegas Metro police.

The numbers from last week show an increase of 51% in prostitution offenses compared to this time last year. The numbers include all arrests related to prostitution with the highest in downtown Las Vegas and our tourist hot spots like the Las Vegas Strip up 21% in 2024.

The increased numbers do come after major events in town where more funding to stop human trafficking is used according to Metro Police.

“It’s a Penalty” was a partnership between multiple law enforcement agencies and the NFL focusing on human trafficking during the lead-up to the Super Bowl. It was funded by the NFL, The Wynn Las Vegas, Caesars, MGM Resorts, and other smaller partnerships. The arrests include pandering, loitering for the purpose of prostitution, and soliciting or engaging in prostitution.

Rosie Harris, the Executive Director of the Refuge for Women, said it is always an issue.

“In Vegas, it is everywhere, and it is prevalent,” she explained. “It’s always happening so I don’t think it’s the numbers going up just maybe it’s being caught more in real time.”

Harris said it is not as simple as someone choosing that lifestyle and understanding those in that community.

“When we think of prostitution most people may think ‘Oh she is choosing to sell her body right,’ never really considering the circumstances that put that woman on that corner,” she said.

She works closely with the Human Trafficking Task Force in Las Vegas and helps women leave the sex industry. So far this year she and her team have helped 46 women and a wall at one of their homes for women is painted as a reminder of those they have helped.

“This is a small way for us to remember that they allowed us to play a part in their story,” Harris said.

Refuge for Women is funded by grants and donors and is free for women looking to leave the sex industry. You can find more information HERE or call the Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
