Utah’s neighbor to the south, Las Vegas, shattered its previous high temperature by three degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, Las Vegas hit 120 degrees at Harry Reid International Airport around 5 p.m. Sunday – breaking the previous record of 117 degrees.

Officials said Vegas hit the previous record five different times – in 2021, 2017, 2013, 2005 and 1942.

NWS officials stressed the dangerous heats by baking chocolate and American flag cookies on the dashboard of a hot car.

Photos of an infrared gun showed the temperature of the car in the sun reached 217 degrees.

There was no information about how successful the team was in baking the cookies, or how they tasted.

Nearby St. George, Utah hit 112 degrees. The temperature was expected to “cool down” to an even 100 degrees by 10 p.m.

The highest temperature recorded in Utah was in St. George – 117 degrees on July 10, 2021.

Salt Lake City reached a temperature of 92 degrees Sunday.

Sin City wasn’t the hottest place in the United States – Furnace Creek in Death Valley National Park reached 126 degrees by 7 p.m. The temperature hti 128 degrees Saturday, and was expected to hit 129 degrees over the weekend. However, that was cooler than the highest temperature recorded of 134 degrees.

One person died at Death Valley National Park and another was hospitalized due to heat exposure.

According to the Associated Press, the visitors were part of a groups of six motorcyclists riding through Badwater Basin.

Emergency helicopters were not able to fly into the area due to the intense heat. Officials said it’s not typically safe for aircraft to flay over 120 degrees.
